Industry Updates from 2022 Spring Meeting
Fifteen industry representatives joined the spring meeting virtually on the 24th of October 2022. NRBAC very much appreciates the vital and ongoing support of DAF Qld for hosting these important meetings.
The following key points are updates on recent activities:
- Barley Australia, Wheat Quality Australia and Grains Industry Market Access Forum (GIMAF) have successfully merged with Grains Australia (GA) and GA has also assumed responsibility for the National Working Party on Grain Protection.
- Recently announced that Richard Simonaitis has been appointed the new CEO of Grains Australia and will commence 1st November 2022.
- Barley Australia activities, including Malting Barley Accreditation, continuing business as usual.
- NRBAC webpage updated with key news and events as well as, upcoming and previous meeting documents uploaded to the NRBAC members only section.
- Barley Australia website (including NRBAC webpage) remains active now until Grains Australia website rebuild and will continue to be updated.
- AEGIC provided market outreach activities to date, and noted they are continuing their online barley webinars and grower seasonal updates in 2022.
- DAF provided an update on the recent disease survey within the barley crop in the Northern Region and noted to be on the watch out for new diseases such as Ramularia as there was a lot of hay movement due to the drought.
- Barley production records don’t reflect the actual areas grown due to the on farm selling to feed lotters.
- GrainCorp updated the committee on the challenges of the past year and emphasised the importance of barley for the feed industry in the Northern regions.
- Seednet provided an update on the progress of Laperouse in Stage 2 of the malt accreditation program and discussed new varieties in the pipeline.
- InterGrain provided updates on the progress of Commodus CL and discussed two new barley varieties, Combat and Zena.
